From Fear to Freedom: Lucy’s First Paragliding Experience

Kostya Garmash
Hello adventurers! I'm Kostya, a passionate rock climber specializing in bouldering and a love for the ocean's waves. I started my climbing journey in Ukraine, where I actively competed in national competitions, bagging several awards. Since moving to Seattle nine years ago, I've been a proud member of the Seattle Bouldering Project. My passion for heights isn't just restricted to boulders. I've scaled majestic peaks like Elbrus, Kazbek, and the challenging terrains of the Bezengi and Caucasus mountains, remembering the proud Mount Rainier. But when I'm not in the mountains, you'll find me riding the Pacific Northwest waves, having immersed myself in surfing since 2015. When the mountains are white, I ski, especially freeriding, with Mount Adams being one of my favorite spots. As the creator of the Rope Jumping team "Extreme Adventures," I've taken the thrill of adventure to another level, jumping off cliffs tethered to a rope. Whether slacklining, hiking or any other outdoor sport, my heart beats for the thrill. Let's embark on an exhilarating journey together!

Introduction:
Some moments in life define us—moments that strip us down to our raw selves and urge us to spread our wings. For Lucy, that moment came on a cliff edge, with nothing but open sky ahead and a paraglider’s harness hugging her tightly. She conquered her fear and gained freedom, one gust of wind at a time.
The Prelude: A Heart-Pounding with Anticipation
Lucy had always been fascinated by the birds soaring above—graceful, free, unbound. Yet, her feet remained firmly planted on the ground, her heart caged by an unspoken fear. The decision to face that fear head-on led her to the rugged cliffs of Oregon’s coastline, where the wind spoke a language only the brave could understand.
The Leap: Into the Realm of the Skies
With each instructional word from her guide, Lucy’s apprehension grew. Harness checked, helmet secured, and heart in her throat, she listened to the symphony of the wind and the waves below. Then, with a deep breath that felt like her first actual gulp of air, Lucy ran towards the edge—and leaped.
The Flight: Dancing with the Currents
The ground fell away, and suddenly, Lucy was part of the sky. The fear that had weighed her down transformed into a weightlessness she’d never known. As the glider caught the wind’s embrace, Lucy was flying—not with the mechanical roar of an airplane, but with the whisper of the wind as her consort.

The Epiphany: Fear Transformed into Awe
As Lucy hung suspended between the vast expanse of blue sky above and the patchwork of the world below, her fear was transcended by a sense of wonder that filled her soul. She was a spectator of the earth’s grandeur and its silent guardian all at once. The cliffs, the sea, the distant horizon whispered the same truth: to respect this world and cherish the freedom it offers.
The Descent: A Soft Return
As all flights must end, Lucy’s wound down with a gentle descent. The ground approached not as a conclusion but as a continuation. Her feet touched down, and she realized she had changed. The fear that had once shackled her now propelled her forward into new adventures, new flights—into freedom.
The Reflection: A Newfound Courage
Back on solid ground, Lucy looked up at the sky with gratitude. Paragliding had offered her a new perspective—not just of the world, but of herself. She had tasted true freedom from gravity and the fear that had long held her back.
Lucy’s Lessons: Embracing the Adventure
Lucy’s experience is a beacon to all who let fear dictate their boundaries. She learned that:
- Preparation breeds confidence; knowledge is the antidote to fear.
- Trust is paramount in the equipment, the instructor, and oneself.
- Courage isn’t the absence of fear but the decision to fly despite it.
Conclusion:
Lucy’s first paragliding experience was more than an adventure; it was a journey from fear to freedom. It was a testament to the human spirit’s boundless potential and a reminder that the sky isn’t the limit—it’s the playground.
